1999 Noël Verset Cornas (France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas) View From the Cellar, 5/1/2009, May/Jun 2009, John Gilman 94 While the 1999 Verset Cornas is by no means at its apogee, it is drinking extremely well already and is a superb example of the vintage. The bouquet is deep and compelling, but also much more sauvage than the 2000, as it offers up notes of cassis, black raspberries, plenty of roasted game, fresh-ground pepper, medicinal syrah tones, striking minerality, black olive, woodsmoke and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and well-balanced, with excellent focus, ripe, well-integrated tannins, great soil inflection, zesty acidity and a very long, opulent and potentially creamy finish. Certainly more complexity will come with further bottle age, but it is hard not to revel in the wine’s voluptuous and generous youth. A fine, fine vintage chez Verset. (drink 2007-2025)

1999 Domaine Noel Verset Cornas Good medium ruby. Spicy aromas of black fruits, game, leather and tapenade. Tightly wound and penetrating, with complex, distinctly wild flavors of blackberry, black olive, leather, roasted meat and minerals. A wine of noble rusticity, projecting a great range of soil tones and inner-mouth aromas. Tight finish features a note of leather. This is remarkably showy considering the recent bottling. 91
