The more elegant and somewhat finer flavors exude minerality that continues onto the very firm but balanced finish that delivers impressive length. This is built to age and is really quite lovely. 2009 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru) View From the Cellar, 11/1/2010, Nov/Dec 2010, John Gilman 93 The ’09 Ile de Vergelesses had been racked on the morning of my visit, but was still showing very fine potential. The quite ripe nose is beautiful, as it offers up scents of red and black cherries, smoke, raw cocoa, a touch of Pernand fruitcake, hints of the bonfire to come and a great base of minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, smoky and rock solid at the core, with classic Ile de Vergelesses stoniness driving the backend. The finish is very long, focused and suavely tannic, with great intensity of flavor and a serious, palate-staining finish. This too will be a great example of the vintage that shows great ripeness without ever straying over the line into overripeness. (drink 2017-2045)
