John Gilman View from the cellar 90+

1999 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru) View From the Cellar, 5/1/2010, May/Jun 2010, John Gilman 90+ The 1999 Clos des Ursules is one of the best young vintages of this bottling that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. The nose is deep and perfumed, as it offers up a fine mélange of black raspberry, blueberries, chocolate, woodsmoke, herbs and earth. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and complex, but just a bit low in acidity, which translates into a wine that is not as bright and sharply defined as many other 1999s in this tasting. But the finish is complex and outstanding, with well-integrated tannins, and impressive length and grip. If tangy acidity is not a pre-requisite of top-notch Burgundy for you, then add at least a couple of points to my score. To my palate, I could easily move this wine up three points at least, if it were possessed of more vibrant acidity. But nevertheless, it is clearly still a well-made wine. (drink 2010-2030)

1999 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru) Burghound, 4/1/2001, 2nd Quarter, 2001, Allen Meadows (web) 88-90 Quite dark with ripe, relatively forward aromas of crushed berries and a trace of oak. This has a wonderful mouth feel to go with refined, silky tannins and a classy delivery of precise, elegant flavors and excellent length. As usual, a first rate effort. (drink starting 2008)
